In the heart of New York City’s vibrant neighborhood of Jackson Heights, just outside the busy 74th Street–Roosevelt Avenue subway station, stands a small but celebrated Nepali restaurant run by Bimala Hamal Shrestha. Known lovingly within the community as “Bimala Didi,” her restaurant has become a symbol of authentic Nepali flavor and cultural pride after being recognized among the top 100 restaurants by The New York Times.
What began in 2015 as a modest dream has now turned into an inspiring success story for the Nepali diaspora. Bimala says she never imagined her small kitchen would one day gain international attention. However, her determination to preserve and promote authentic Nepali cuisine never faded. She believes food is more than taste — it reflects a nation’s identity, traditions, and civilization. According to her, the growing popularity of Nepali restaurants in New York has helped introduce Nepal’s rich culture to people from around the world.

Her restaurant is especially famous for traditional dishes such as sel roti, momo, chowmein, bhutan, and sukuti. In the early days of the business, she often served sel roti complimentary to customers, a gesture that eventually helped attract loyal visitors. Today, many customers visit specifically to enjoy authentic Nepali thali meals, while others appreciate the rare experience of eating traditional Nepali food by hand in a warm, homely environment.
Over the years, Bimala Didi’s restaurant has also earned recognition at several momo competitions held across New York City. Beyond her achievements in business, she is widely respected within the Nepali community for her generosity and social contributions. Community leaders say she consistently supports social and cultural programs organized by Nepalis in New York.

Having moved to the United States in 2008, Bimala understands the challenges immigrant entrepreneurs face, especially in a competitive and diverse city like New York. Yet through dedication, honesty, and hard work, she transformed those struggles into success. Her journey has now become an inspiration not only for Nepalis abroad but for anyone pursuing dreams far from home.
